Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) Community Awareness

You may have noticed the scarce and distorted leaves on Vermont's beech trees and saplings this year. Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) is a rapidly moving plant disease that has caused widespread damage in just the past two years. Sadly, many beech trees will not survive the onslaught. What causes this blight? Is there any way of stopping it? What about all the critters that rely on beech trees? These were some of the many questions discussed at the Beech Leaf Disease Community Awareness Meeting held in Brattleboro on October 10, 2025. State of Vermont plant and wildlife experts and local forestry specialists explained what we currently know about the blight and answered questions from community members. The goal was to provide participants with actionable steps towards reducing the impacts of this devastating disease on our forests, homes, and wildlife. For those who were unable to attend in person, Brattleboro Community TV recorded the presentation and published it online. Many thanks to the panelists for providing expertise, and to Guilford Tree Warden Matty Stinchfield for facilitating the event.
