Nipping Invasives in the Bud! Local online fundraising....
Anyone with invasive plant species experience understands that it's much easier to remove before it becomes well established. Giant Hogweed and Buckthorn, two invasive plant species are attempting to establish themselves on the East Orange Branch of the Waits River and Cookeville Brook. Hogweed is a photosensitive plant that causes scarring blisters on human skin. It has large seed flowers that can float on water for up to 3 days germinating downstream and spreading this harmful plant. Buckthorn forms dense thickets that crowd and shade out native shrubs and herbs, eliminating habitat for small mammals and beneficial insects. The Nipping Invasives In the Bud project is seeking $7000 to help eradicate these stands before they become established.
